History - A young nation who was once called the “New World,” America is the self-proclaimed leader of the Allies. He has blue eyes and short blonde hair, which was changed to a light brownish-blonde color in the anime adaptation.

During his early childhood, he was fought over by France, England, and Finland, a fight which England ended up winning. America was raised by England, and the two had a brotherly relationship, all which went bad after the American Revolution. In modern times, they get along, but are often found bickering with each other or teasing each other. Even though they appear to hate each other at times, they both really care for one another’s wellbeing, and England is really one of the only true friends that America has.

Another good pal of America’s is Japan, who is also said to be one of America’s “true friends.” The two often play videogames and watch movies together, and collaborate to create new technology and cars. America seems to be fond of Japan’s culture, lifestyle, and home, going so far as to get excited after seeing the Tokyo Tower and an average neighborhood shrine. Japan is often puzzled by America’s “Western Culture” and was shown taking pictures of his “strangely colored” cakes before.

America also has a friend named Tony, who is an alien from outer space. Even though he interacts with aliens, America can’t see fairies, spirits, or other mystical creatures like England can. It was shown, however, that he is able to see them on Halloween, but no other day in the year.

Personality - He’s rather absent-minded, is always spacing out, and irresponsible, but ever so cheery, kind, and big-hearted, making him prone to crying, whining, and getting offended or picked on at times. Another trait that he seems to possess is his habit of being overly-affectionate, going so far as to be quite the “touch-feely” type of person, hugging and kissing people upon greeting and even far into the conversation. Despite his flaws, most of the other nations are usually tolerant of him. His hobbies include art, drawing, designing, singing, siestas, flirting with girls, remodeling German cars, and cooking, and the things he loves most are pasta, pizza, gelato, fruit, and cheese. He is sometimes seen humming obnoxiously, skipping around, and gesturing wildly when talking, something that he seems to have been born with. More often then not, he forgets to put his pants on after taking a siesta and runs around nude, usually causing Switzerland to open fire on him when he runs across his border. Even though Romano will deny it, Italy was mentioned to have Germanic blood in him (while Romano has Arabic).

A long running joke throughout the series is that Italy is utterly useless (the title of the series is even named after this), lazy, and weak. However, it was shown in the past that Italy single-handedly defeated Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) while still just a child, implying that he isn’t as useless as one might think. As said by Hidekaz Himaruya, he doesn’t use his strength because he is “too scared and too much of a coward to do so.”

Hidekaz Himaruya once stated that Italy’s ahoge was “added last-minute to make him look cuter.” Throughout the series, it is noticeable that all of the Italians (as well as Romano) posses one of these curly ahoge (or hair curl, if you prefer).

Italy’s nickname, “Ita-chan,” was given to him by Spain when he was a child (which he still calls him to this day). Italy is also called "Hetalia" (a term derived from the Japanese word "hetare," meaning "useless," and "Italia") on some occasions, one being in the ending theme, "Marukaite Chikyuu," in which he refers to himself as such.

Usually, you can hear the strange sound “veh” escape his mouth. He’s also been noted to cry out his famous and signature line “PASTA!” randomly, as well as “herahera” (which means “foolish” in Japanese).

History - The beloved and favorite grandson of the once great Roman Empire, North Italy, better known as just “Italy,” can be described as nonetheless, a failure in following in his grandpa’s footsteps and a complete crybaby. He is often called “Veneziano” because he represents the northern half of the country. He has short reddish-brown hair with a curly ahoge that sticks out on the left side of his head, and brown eyes. In earlier artwork, Italy’s hair was colored a medium shade of brown and his eyes grey.

As a child, he spent his days with his grandpa until he passed away. Afterwards, he was taken to live in Austria’s house along with Hungary and the Holy Roman Empire, who did not know of his true gender and developed a crush on him. His gender was often mistaken because of the fact that he was always seen wearing dresses. Even Austria did not know of his gender, and did not find out until he had a giant growth spurt and his voice changed.

His official blood-related brother is South Italy, more commonly called “Romano.” It was confirmed that Romano is the older of the two, and that they are not twins (despite some assumptions by fans). The two weren’t raised together, and since Italy apparently inherited all of their grandfather’s traits (and good looks, according to Romano), they are on somewhat bad terms. Italy loves his older brother very much, but Romano seems less than enthused to even admit that the two are related. Despite this, Romano does actually care for Italy, as shown in some instances where he showed dismay for various reasons, most often being the fact that Italy admires and spends time with Germany more than he does with him. It should be noted that Italy calls his brother “Romano,” and Romano calls Italy “Veneziano” (most likely to avoid confusion between the two).

He considers France and Spain to also be his older brothers, going so far as to refer to them as “Spain-niichan” and “France-oniichan.” Spain, who was in control of Romano at one time, wanted nothing more than for Italy to come and live in his house, a dream that he still has even to this day. Nowadays, France, who fought against Italy in WWII, still has a pleasant relationship with him and often gives him (usually bad and inappropriate) advice at times.

After WWI, Italy, who was Germany’s prisoner of war, eventually went on to become allies with him and formed the Axis Powers when Japan joined them years later. Throughout the series, Italy is shown heavily relying on Germany for almost everything from tying his shoes to learning how to properly throw and set off a grenade (which he still has not accomplished). Despite Germany’s constant efforts, Italy usually doesn’t listen to him and ends up daydreaming or wandering off. Even though Germany often gets fed up with Italy, the two are very close and consider themselves as best friends, even to this day.

History - Prussia was a German kingdom and historic state originating out of the Duchy of Prussia and the Margraviate of Brandenburg. For centuries, the House of Hohenzollern ruled Prussia, successfully expanding its size by way of an unusually well-organized and effective army. Prussia shaped the history of Germany, with its capital in Berlin after 1451. After 1871, Prussia was increasingly merged into Germany, losing its distinctive identity. It was effectively abolished in 1932, and officially abolished in 1947.[1]

The name Prussia derives from the Old Prussians. In the 13th century, "Old Prussia" was conquered by German crusaders, the Teutonic Knights. In 1308 Teutonic Knights conquered the formerly Polish region of Pomerelia with Gdańsk (Danzig). Their monastic state was mostly Germanized through immigration from central and western Germany and in the south it was Polonized by settlers from Masovia. After the Second Peace of Thorn of 1466, Prussia was split into the western Royal Prussia, a province of Poland, and the eastern part, since 1525 called Duchy of Prussia, a fief of the Crown of Poland up to 1657. They didn't speak up enough so they ended up with the extrememly small and unoticeable land area known as Luxembourg. Yoshi was born and raised by her big brother France. She learned the French culture and the language to bring it back to her country and start hanging out with her big brother Germany. History - After Sweden grew sick of living life under the rule of Denmark, he snapped and fled the household, Finland choosing to follow after him to gain freedom as well.

Though Finland was happy to be away from Denmark, he at first found the quiet and expressionless Sweden to be rather intimidating. He initially planned to run away, but after Sweden embraced him to keep him warm, figured that the taller man was probably simply hard to communicate with and not a real "threat".

Husband and Wife when Finland managed to reconnect with his friend Estonia, Sweden introduced himself and referred to Finland as his "wife". A startled Finland thought that he had to be joking, but as it turned out, Sweden was quite serious about seeing him as his "wife".

Sweden tried to get Estonia and Latvia to move in with them (as their children?), but could only get partial custody due to the intervention of Poland (who wouldn't let him have Lithuania).

Later on in their "married" life, Finland found a white puppy and adopted it. After a slew of bizarre names, he and Sweden made a compromise and called it Hanatamago.

Sweden also altered his spare clothing in order for Finland to have extra clothes, due to their drastic difference in height (12cm).

Modern Life: "Papa And Mama"EditAfter Sealand put himself up for auction on Ebay, Sweden, who was the only bidder, won custody of him and became his adoptive father. In the modern day-set strips, he has raised Sealand as a son. It is debatable if Finland acts as the "mother", as the three have only been seen together in one strip.

Due to Sealand being more interested in video games and TV than playing with his "papa", Sweden came up with an idea to make Sealand pay attention, by stuffing a cardboard box with "England" written on it over him and shaking him, creating what he called a "Dambolis".

He was once a super nation that controlled Middle and Eastern Europe with his partner Lithuania in the Middle Ages, until Russia split them apart and he was annexed. Despite this, he kept rising back (described "like a phoenix"), noting that Poland is a very strong country.

It is difficult for others to get to know him because he acts shy and has anxiety towards strangers. However, once he becomes used to someone, he will never let go and will act troublesome. He is a cheerful, somewhat selfish man who is rather forceful with his opinions. Because he is short-sighted and impulsive, other nations can easily take advantage of him. In the character identification chart, it was said he has a fairly weak stomach.

He crossdresses as a hobby, and has a Nagoya schoolgirl dialect, often translated as a "valley girl" accent. However, his crossdressing was toned down in later strips; one instance (in the sequel to Christmas Rampage 2007) was removed from the site.

History - Poland and Lithuania worked together as partners in the Middle Ages, and formed a kingdom that controlled Middle and Eastern Europe. During this time, the two took part in the Battle Of Grunwald (known as the First Battle of Tannenberg), facing off against Teutonic Knights, also known as Prussia at that time period. When it appeared that Lithuania had abandoned Poland, it turned out to only be a ruse of his, in order to gain the upper hand against the Teutonic Knights.

The two managed to win the war, but wound up involved in another battle some time after: The Polish-Swedish Wars. Since Sweden opted to head back and not pursue the fight with them, the two were left with no opponents to fight against.

Lithuania often felt dragged about by Poland, who treated him as a mere lackey and wanted him to "adjust" and live like him. Poland also insisted that he would help Toris as long as he'd listen to what he said, when it came to the wars with Russia.

Eventually, the two were split apart when Russia annexed Poland and took Lithuania off to live with him, with Lithuania shouting largely in protest for Poland to wake up. Polands' only response to watching Lithuania being dragged off was to comment on how funny his face looked.

Poland would wind up partitioned time and time again, Russia considering it a hobby of his to do such.

History - The “much larger in size, but much smaller in population” country above America. Because of his southern neighbor, he’s often overshadowed and forgotten. His hair is blonde with blondish-orange tips, and his eyes are violet, but have been colored blue on some occasions. In the anime, his hair was changed to a dark blonde, seemingly just a shade darker than America’s, and his eyes were changed to being dark blue. He has a long curly ahoge that stems from his middle-part.

His blood brother is America, though it is not known who is the older of the two or whether or not they are twins (a common fan-speculation). America has been said as being the source of Canada’s constant troubles and worries, due to his rambunctious behavior. Canada is often mistaken for America thanks to their extremely similar appearance. Because of this, he usually takes the heat for America from other countries. For this, Canada holds a major grudge against America and has tried lashing out at him on several occasions, but usually just can’t (for he is somewhat “passive-aggressive,” one could say). However, once, he made America cry after pointing out all of his faults for three hours straight. Despite this, they seem to get along, seeing as how America often goes over to Canada’s house to visit him.

One country that always tends to mistake Canada for America is Cuba, who beats up Canada sometimes because of this. Feeling bad after doing so (and finding out that the one he hurt was Canada and not America), he was shown giving Canada ice-cream to make up for everything, and once invited him to visit his house (only to subsequently mistake him for America and beat him up again).

When poor Canada’s not being mistaken for his brother, he’s being forgotten. It seems as though his presence isn’t even noticed during meetings, and he’s usually depicted as being “transparent

History - The history of New Zealand dates back at least 700 years to when it was discovered and settled by Polynesians, who developed a distinct Māori culture centred on kinship links and land. The first European explorer to discover New Zealand was Abel Janszoon Tasman on 13 December 1642.[1] Captain James Cook, who reached New Zealand in October 1769 on the first of his three voyages,[2] was the first European explorer to circumnavigate and map New Zealand.
From the late 18th century, the country was regularly visited by explorers and other sailors, missionaries, traders and adventurers. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs, bringing New Zealand into the British Empire and giving Māori equal rights with British citizens. There was extensive European and some Asian settlement throughout the rest of the century. War and the imposition of a European economic and legal system led to most of New Zealand's land passing from Māori to Pākehā (European) ownership, and most Māori subsequently became impoverished.
From the 1890s the New Zealand parliament enacted a number of progressive initiatives, including women's suffrage and old age pensions. From the 1930s the economy was highly regulated and an extensive welfare state was developed. Meanwhile, Māori culture underwent a renaissance, and from the 1950s Māori began moving to the cities in large numbers. This led to the development of a Māori protest movement which in turn led to greater recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi in the late 20th century. In the 1980s the economy was largely deregulated and a number of socially liberal policies, such as decriminalisation of homosexuality, were put in place. Foreign policy, which had previously consisted mostly of following the United Kingdom or the United States, became more independent. Subsequent governments have generally maintained these policies, although tempering the free market ethos somewhat.
